A survivor's group for women who have a learning disability

Describes a women's group run for 6 women (aged 20-33 yrs) with learning disabilities and a history of sexual abuse/assault. It outlines the format of the group sessions, the therapeutic process and the outcome of the evaluation of the impact of the group on the women's psychological well-being, self-esteem, assertiveness and general satisfaction with the intervention. The outcome was generally favorable, however, this was not maintained on all the measures at 3 mo follow-up. Possible reasons for the results are discussed, along with recommendations for future group work. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2002 APA, all rights reserved)

Abstract:
The authors describe a women's group that was conducted for 6 women (aged 20-33 years) with learning disabilities and a history of sexual abuse/assault. The authors then review the format of the group sessions, the therapeutic process, as well as information learned from the evaluation of the impact of the group on variables including the women's self-esteem, psychological well-being, assertiveness, and overall satisfaction with the intervention. The initial outcome was mostly favorable; however, this effect was not maintained for each measure at a 3-month follow-up. The authors discuss possible reasons for the findings and make recommendations for future group work with this population.
