Sexual assault victimization among straight, gay/lesbian, and bisexual college students.

Summary: The purpose of the study was to examine the prevalence and correlates of sexual assault among straight, bisexual and gay college students. The study analyzed data from the Online College Social Life Survey, which was a survey of 21,000 students. In the study, one out of four heterosexual women experienced sexual assault after being in college for four years. Gay and bisexual men experienced the same rate of sexual assault as heterosexual women.  Bisexual women were at the greatest risk with almost two out of five experiencing sexual assault after four years in college.

Intimate Partner Violence and HIV/STD Risk Among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Individuals

To date, there has been little research examining HIV/STD risk among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals who are in abusive relationships. This article uses data collected from a community-based organization that provides counseling for LGBT victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). A total of 58 clients completed the survey, which inquired as to sexual violence and difficulties negotiating safer sex with their abusive partners. A large percentage of participants reported being forced by their partners to have sex (41%).

Sexual assault and alcohol abuse: A comparison of lesbians and heterosexual women

Purpose: To compare and contrast lesbians' and heterosexual women's experiences of sexual assault and to investigate relationships between sexual assault and alcohol abuse. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with 63 lesbians and a demographically matched comparison group of 57 heterosexual women. Lesbians' and heterosexual women's experiences of sexual assault, drinking levels, and alcohol-abuse indicators were compared using descriptive statistics. LISTEL analysis was used to test the effects of sexual assault on a latent measure of alcohol abuse.

Street careers: Homelessness, drug use, and sex work among young men who have sex with men (YMSM)

"Hustling" or sex work is a common means of surviving on the streets and paying for drugs among homeless youth. In this article, we formulate the concepts of "street capital" and "street competencies" to describe how 10 young men who have sex with men (YMSM) in New York City accumulated various knowledge and skills throughout their childhood and adolescence, and later entered into homelessness and the street economy as sex workers. While half of these young men described themselves as gay or bisexual, sexual identity was not a primary consideration amongst these youth.
